Sunline Transit Agency Media Event to Announce Grant Award For Xcelsior® Hydrogen Fuel Cell-Electric Buses

Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada – April 21, 2017: (TSX: NFI) (TSX: NFI.DB.U) New Flyer Industries Inc. (“New Flyer” or the “Company”), the largest transit bus and motor coach manufacturer and parts distributor in North America, announced today it will participate in SunLine Transit Agency’s event on Friday, April 21, to announce a grant award from California Climate Investments and the California Air Resources Board for five XHE40 Xcelsior® zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell-electric transit buses.

New Flyer, the market leader in zero-emission buses, is the only North American transit bus manufacturer offering all three types of zero-emission propulsion systems including: hydrogen fuel cell-electric, battery-electric and trolley-electric buses. New Flyer’s system integration of Hydrogenics’ leading edge hydrogen fuel cell technology into an Xcelsior 40-foot heavy-duty transit bus eliminates the need for an off-board electrical charging system. The fuel cell replaces an internal combustion engine by generating electricity to power the electric drive motor.

Fuel cell electric buses have operating ranges over 300 miles with zero tailpipe emissions and re-filling hydrogen can be accomplished in only a few minutes, without the need for overnight plug-in battery recharging. This technology is yet another key milestone in New Flyer’s environmentally conscious approach to bus design.

“We’re honored to partner with SunLine Transit Agency on this important zero-emission deployment program,” said David Warren, Director of Sustainable Transportation for New Flyer. He adds, “SunLine has 17 years of experience operating fuel cell-electric buses. Their expertise, knowledge and fueling capabilities with the newest generation of equipment is a major asset to this program.  Our engineering and integration of the Hydrogenics Celerity(+) fuel cell into the New Flyer Xcelsior has yielded significant opportunities to further reduce the overall life cycle cost of hydrogen fuel cell electric buses.”

SunLine’s deployment of the five New Flyer XHE40 Xcelsior zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell-electric transit buses is part of California Climate Investments, a statewide program that puts billions of cap-and-trade dollars to work reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening the economy and improving public health and the environment — particularly in disadvantaged communities. The cap-and-trade program also creates a financial incentive for industries to invest in clean technologies and develop innovative ways to reduce pollution. California Climate Investments projects include affordable housing, renewable energy, public transportation, zero-emission vehicles, environmental restoration, more sustainable agriculture, recycling and much more. At least 35 percent of these investments are made in disadvantaged and low-income communities. For more information, visit https://arb.ca.gov/caclimateinvestments.
