City of Phoenix expands transit service with 30 additional Xcelsior® clean diesel buses from New Flyer

The order is the second procurement for the city from a five-year contract and replaces end-of-life buses.

The Phoenix Public Transit Department (PTD) has exercised options under its joint contract with the Valley Metro Regional Public Transportation Authority (Valley Metro) for 30, 40-foot Xcelsior® clean diesel heavy-duty transit buses, converted from New Flyer of America Inc.’s (New Flyer) backlog.

The order, supported by Federal Transit Administration funding, is the second procurement for the city of Phoenix, Ariz., from a five-year contract awarded in 2017 for up to 403 buses and replaces end-of-life buses in support of Phoenix’s 35-year Transportation 2050 plan to improve transit service.

“With nearly 1,000 buses delivered to PTD since 1994, the city of Phoenix has counted on New Flyer for reliable mobility; now adding 30 more buses to support its expanding public transit network,” said Chris Stoddart, president, New Flyer. “With clean diesel technology that filters emissions and ultimately reduces NOx by 95 percent, our buses continue to deliver safe, reliable and efficient mobility for the greater Phoenix community.”

New Flyer says its clean diesel technology combines ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel, advanced engines and effective emissions controls, resulting in a highly efficient and virtually smoke-free engine that can achieve lower emissions, reduce greenhouse gases and reduce the cost of bus operation.
