The Honourable Brian Tobin served as a Member of Parliament for the government of Canada from 1980 to 1996 and was appointed Minister of Fisheries and Oceans from 1993 to 1996. Mr. Tobin is a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors and a graduate of the Directors Education Program.

This is a very prestigious award and we are truly honoured and very proud to have Brian as the Chair of the New Flyer Board of Directors,” said Paul Soubry, New Flyer’s President and Chief Executive Officer.  “From everyone at New Flyer we would like to congratulate Mr. Tobin on this esteemed honour.”

Established in 1967 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Order of Canada is the centrepiece of Canada’s honours system and recognizes a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation. The Order recognizes people in all sectors of Canadian society. Their contributions are varied, yet they have all enriched the lives of others and made a difference to this country. The Order of Canada’s motto is DESIDERANTES MELIOREM PATRIAM (They desire a better country). From now on Brian will place the initials O.C. after his name.

Brian already has the initials P.C. after his name which refers to the fact that he was a member of the Privy Council of the Government of Canada which is a body that advises the head of state of a nation, typically, but not always, in the context of a monarchic government. The word “privy” means “private” or “secret”; thus, a privy council was originally a committee of the monarch’s closest advisors to give confidential advice on affairs of state.
