JAMESTOWN — State Sen. George Borrello recently toured the New Flyer America Inc., manufacturing facility off Fluvanna Avenue. The company is the leading manufacturer of heavy-duty buses and a leader in electric mass mobility solutions in the U.S. and Canada.

New Flyer opened its Jamestown manufacturing facility in January of 2017. Sen. Borrello advocated for the project when he was chairman of the Chautauqua County Legislature’s Planning and Economic Development Committee and as a member of the county Industrial Development Agency board.

“Our region has a great manufacturing history. We also have a bright future as a center of manufacturing innovation. I’m very proud of what is being made here,” Sen. Borrello said. “New Flyer is a world-leading manufacture of low- and zero-emission buses. They are building the future of bus technology right now in Jamestown.”

Starting with 40 employees in 2017, New Flyer’s Jamestown plant now has around 70 workers, according to company officials. Rhys Preston, New Flyer Jamestown Plant General Manager, and Lindy Norris, Director of Marketing and Public Affairs, guided Sen. Borrello during his tour of the Jamestown plant.

“New Flyer is a forward-thinking company on the leading-edge of zero-emission transportation technology – that includes electric and hydrogen fuel-cell technology,” Sen. Borrello said. “New Flyer – and its parent company NFI Group – are recognized as leaders globally, and many of their most important bus components are made in our community. I’m proud to have New Flyer in my district and I’m happy to report that they are hiring at competitive wages, and offer ongoing training and workforce development.”

Borrello, an advocate of S.T.E.M. educational programs to prepare students for job opportunities within the 57th Senate District, said New Flyer is the kind of forward-thinking company offering those cutting-edge job opportunities.

“This is where the jobs and opportunities are, in the skilled trades and applied sciences. I want to thank New Flyer for its commitment to our region and for recognizing the value of being in a supportive community with an educated, motivated, highly trained workforce,” Borrello said.

New Flyer is North America’s largest transit bus manufacturer. They supply zero-emission buses to seven transit agencies in New York State, including the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) in Buffalo, Rochester’s Regional Transit Service, Albany’s Capital District Transit Authority, Westchester County, Nassau County’s Nassau Inter-County Express and more.
