New Flyer receives two new battery-electric bus orders

Published by Mass Transit

New Flyer of America Inc. (New Flyer) is currently delivering four zero-emission, battery-electric Xcelsior CHARGE® 40-foot heavy-duty transit buses, equipped with next-generation high-energy batteries providing 440kWh of energy to Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA).

The purchase, which follows CDTA’s first battery-electric bus order for four Xcelsior CHARGE® buses delivered to CDTA in 2020, propels its strategic plan and helps the state to reach its goal of transitioning transit fleets to 100 percent renewable energy by 2035.

“Since 2015, NFI has delivered over 40 transit buses to CDTA and continues to support them through their transition to zero-emission,” said Chris Stoddart, president, North American Bus and Coach. “Our battery-electric Xcelsior CHARGE buses will benefit the New York region by delivering immediate emissions and noise reductions, and will help CDTA to meet its goals to enhance New York’s transportation through innovative, sustainable mobility solutions.”

Designed on the proven Xcelsior® platform, each battery-electric Xcelsior CHARGE® bus can reduce up to 100 to 160 tons of greenhouse gas per year. For more information, visit newflyer.com/buses.

New Flyer has also received two new contracts from Santa Barbara Metropolitan Transit District (MTD) for a total of nine battery-electric, zero-emission Xcelsior CHARGE® 40-foot heavy-duty transit buses.

Supported by Federal Transit Administration (FTA) funds, the new bus orders deliver on MTD’s pursuit of a 100 percent zero-emission fleet by 2030 and also fulfil the California Air Resources Board’s (CARB) Innovative Clean Transit (ICT) regulation, requiring agencies to switch to 100 percent zero-emission bus fleets by 2040.

“Today, MTD joins 10 California transit agencies in choosing battery-electric buses from New Flyer to power their transition to zero-emission mobility,” said Stoddart. “Built on the proven Xcelsior platform, our battery-electric buses deliver immediate clean air benefits by reducing up to 160 tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year. Together with MTD, we are mitigating climate change and building more sustainable communities in California.”
