Blacksburg Transit orders five electric buses from New Flyer
Published by Mass Transit
The 35-foot and 60-foot battery-electric buses will join the five electric buses Blacksburg Transit currently has in operation.
New Flyer of America Inc. will provide Blacksburg Transit with three 40-foot Xcelsior CHARGE NG™ heavy-duty transit buses and two 60-foot zero-emission, battery-electric Xcelsior CHARGE NG™ transit buses under a new contract. Previously, Blacksburg Transit purchased five electric buses from New Flyer in 35-foot and 60-foot lengths.
Blacksburg Transit provides public transportation in Blacksburg, Virginia Tech, Christiansburg and parts of Montgomery County in Virginia, delivering more than 3.7 million annual passenger trips. The purchase is funded in part through the Federal Transit Administration Low or No Emission Grant Program funding and supports Blacksburg Transit’s objectives to reach fleet energy efficiency and positive environmental impacts.
“Since 1998, NFI has delivered nearly 90 vehicles to Blacksburg Transit, powering Virginia’s transportation system with reliable mobility,” said Chris Stoddart, president, North American Bus and Coach. “By adding high performance battery-electric buses, Blacksburg Transit is leveraging NFI technology to provide more efficient and longer-range mobility that ultimately eliminates greenhouse gases and delivers quieter transportation.”
