New Flyer is the First Transit OEM to Meet Cummins 2010 Installation Requirements

Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, May 3, 2010; New Flyer Industries Inc. (TSX:NFI.UN) (“New Flyer” or the “Company”), the leading manufacturer of heavy-duty transit buses in Canada and the United States, has been informed by Cummins that it is the first transit bus manufacturer to successfully complete the rigorous requirements necessary for the commercial sale of its buses with Cummins EPA 2010 engines.  This criteria established by Cummins provides necessary guidance for high quality engine installations and helps to ensure all 2010 EPA requirements are met.

“New Flyer has spent the last 24 months designing and testing cooling systems and the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) emission system. Optimal solutions were developed for both the LFR and the new Xcelsior models.  To date, we have logged 20,000 transit service miles on the final production configuration to assure our customers receive the most reliable coaches possible.” said Glen Naylor, New Flyer’s Director of Engineering, New Product Development.  “As part of the configuration change, the AC system was moved to the roof over the front axle which improves weight balance and air distribution, reduces noise, and allows us to offer customers a rear window option.”

It was only logical for New Flyer to select Xcelsior as the first platform to complete the approval process.  Xcelsior was launched in October 2008 at the APTA EXPO in San Diego and is designed to be a best-in-class bus.  In addition to being the first bus model to be certified to the 2010 emissions requirements, it is also a very lightweight vehicle, which further reduces its environmental footprint.  Xcelsior also has the industry’s first LED headlights, the first electronic instrument panel and the best-in-class 1:7 slope on its wheelchair ramp.

“We congratulate New Flyer on reaching this significant milestone in the launch of its new transit bus offerings,” said Tom Hodek – General Manager, Bus Business for Cummins.  “The successful completion of the installation requirements is a testament to the constructive collaboration between New Flyer and Cummins.”
