New Flyer Receives 2009 Greenest Employer Award for second consecutive year

Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada − April 16, 2009 − (TSX:NFI.UN) New Flyer Industries Canada ULC, which is the Canadian operating subsidiary of New Flyer Industries Inc. (“New Flyer”), the leading manufacturer of heavy-duty transit vehicles in Canada and the United States, has been named as one of Canada’s Greenest Employers for 2009 (formerly known as the Most Earth-Friendly Employers) for the second consecutive year by the editors of Canada’s Top 100 Employers.

Employers were evaluated based on earth-friendly initiatives that involve employee participation, the degree to which environmental values have been integrated into the corporate culture, and how well these initiatives are attracting both employees and customers to their organizations.  Other employers selected for the 2009 list include Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, Hewlett-Packard Canada Co., IBM Canada Ltd., IKEA Canada Limited Partnership, KPMG LLP, Royal Bank of Canada, TD Bank Financial Group, and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada Inc.

“Receiving this recognition for the second consecutive year is a great honor,” said Paul Soubry, New Flyer’s President and CEO.  “With millions of people riding our buses everyday across North America, it is our responsibility to build environmentally-friendly heavy-duty transit vehicles in a sustainable manner. We are proud to offer the broadest range of environmentally-friendly vehicles of any heavy-duty transit bus manufacturer in Canada and the U.S., and will continue to search out new ways and means to protect our planet’s environment.”

New Flyer operates a Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) reduction program, which is the backbone of its pollution prevention activities, and employee education is a critical component to the success of this program.  “Since 2004 the facility has reduced VOC emission per production vehicle by approximately 50%. This program is currently focused on the elimination of aerosol cleaning products to reduce VOC emissions by an additional 2%,” said Eric St. Pierre, New Flyer’s Environmental Coordinator. Employees are also trained on product usage and waste reduction, which has eliminated the use of thousands of liters of paint and the associated waste stream.

New Flyer has been certified to ISO 14001 environmental management standard since 2005.  In 2005, the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME) awarded New Flyer the 2005 CCME Pollution Prevention Award.  In 2004, CALSTART, North America’s leading advanced transportation organization, awarded New Flyer the Blue Sky Award, which is given for outstanding marketplace contributions to advanced, sustainable transportation.
